چکیده

Skrondal and Rabe-Hesketh (2004) proposed a generalized latent variable modeling framework integrating 1) factor analytic and random coe cient models, 2) models with discrete and continuous unobserved variables, and 3) hierarchical models with unobserved variables at di erent levels. This framework is implemented in their GLLAMM software package. In this paper I describe a strongly related framework that is implemented in the syntax version of the Latent GOLD software (Vermunt and Magidson, 2007). The most important extension compared to the GLLAMM approach is that it allows de ning models with any combination of discrete and continuous latent variables at each level of the hierarchy. The approach is illustrated with a multilevel application in educational testing; that is, using a set of mathematics test items taken from pupils nested within schools. An item response theory model is constructed for the responses on the test items and the between-school di erences in pupils' abilities and item di culties is modeled using a discrete mixture distribution at the school level.

The Use of Multilevel Item Response Theory Modeling in Applied Research: An Illustration

Embedding item response theory (IRT) models within a multilevel modeling framework has been shown by many authors to allow better estimation of the relationships between predictor variables and IRT latent traits (Adams, Wilson, & Wu, 1997). A multilevel IRT model recently proposed by Kamata (1998, 2001) yields the additional benefit of being able to accommodate data that are collected in hierar...

A Multilevel Bayesian Item Response Theory Method for Scaling Socioeconomic Status in International Studies of Education

A new method is presented and implemented for deriving a scale of socioeconomic status (SES) from international survey data using a multilevel Bayesian item response theory (IRT) model. The proposed model incorporates both international anchor items and nation-specific items and is able to (a) produce student family SES scores that are internationally comparable, (b) reduce the influence of irr...

Investigating the Impact of Item Parameter Drift for Item Response Theory Models with Mixture Distributions

This study investigates the impact of item parameter drift (IPD) on parameter and ability estimation when the underlying measurement model fits a mixture distribution, thereby violating the item invariance property of unidimensional item response theory (IRT) models. An empirical study was conducted to demonstrate the occurrence of both IPD and an underlying mixture distribution using real-worl...

Improving measurement in health education and health behavior research using item response modeling: introducing item response modeling.

This paper is the first of several papers designed to demonstrate how the application of item response models in the behavioral sciences can be used to enhance the conceptual and technical toolkit of researchers and developers and to understand better the psychometric properties of psychosocial measures. The papers all use baseline data from the Behavior Change Consortium data archive. This pap...

Ac 2007-1783: Getting More from Your Data: Application of Item Response Theory to the Statistics Concept Inventory

This paper applies the techniques of Item Response Theory (IRT) to data from the Statistics Concept Inventory (SCI). Based on results from the Fall 2005 post-test (n = 422 students), the analyses of IRT are compared with those of Classical Test Theory (CTT). The concepts are extended to discussions of other applications, such as computerized adaptive testing and Likertscale items which may be o...
